About Gulmit Educational and Social Society (GESWS)
The Gulmit Educational and Social Welfare Society (GESWS) is a community-based organization in upper Hunza-Gojal Tehsil, owned and managed by the local community through 100% household membership of the 500 households of Gulmit, which is the administrative headquarter of the Tehsil and former winter capital of the old Hunza State.
The Society was established in 1991 to cater to the dire needs of quality education and develop future leaders who could compete with other regions of Pakistan and globally.Gulmit Educational & Social Welfare Society (GESWS) was formally registered in 1992 under the Voluntary Social Welfare Agencies (registration and control ordinance 1961). The supreme body of GESWS is the general body comprising of 500 registered members of the organization who represents one member from each household in the village. The membership is open and new members are included on voluntary basis. The general body elects 15 members Executive Committee (EC) for one year term and a President for three year term through election and consensus.
The organization has established systems and has worked with national and international donors including British High Commission Islamabad, Aga Khan Foundation, SGAFP-NRSP, Government of Gilgit Baltistan, Government of Pakistan and other local and national philanthropists. For acquiring the land and local materials, the organizing raises funds and contributions from the local community both in kind and in cash.

The mission of GESWS is to build sustainable community-based institutions and enhance their capacities with ownership of the community.
Goal of GESWS
The goal of GESWS is to enhance the quality of life of the rural people by providing them opportunities for educational and social and cultural development.
The major projects initiated by GESWS include:
- Established Al-Amyn Model School Gulmit (Community-based full-fledged high school )
- Establishment of Al-Amyn Girls Hotel
- Gulmit Central Graveyard
- Project Bulbulik
